Brunswick County's Leland Middle School may impose a uniform policy, though a fairly liberal one, next school year. School Principal Patricia Underwood asked school board members on Tuesday to allow her school to require uniforms. Catherine Cooke and Shirley Babson, the board members present at the curriculum and policy meeting, responded favorably to her request. They put the item on the agenda for the school board's May 11 meeting. "The students' focus needs to be on instruction, not on each other and what each other is wearing," Underwood said. Short, tight shirts, inappropriate T-shirts Links of London sagging pants are the biggest problem, she told the Links of London Sweetie Bracelet Medium members. Currently, the Brunswick schools with student uniforms are Lincoln, Town Creek and Belville elementary, all in the northern end of the county. Lincoln Elementary Principal Retha Rusk said uniforms, adopted this school year, have had a big positive impact on student discipline at her school. A survey Underwood presented says 96 percent of Leland Middle's staff and 53 percent of parents polled were in favor of student uniforms. That rate goes down dramatically among the students themselves, with 21 percent in favor in sixth and Links of London Sweetie Bracelet big grades. The school would compromise with students by no longer requiring them to tuck in their shirts if uniforms are adopted, Underwood said. Also, jeans would be allowed, and shirts would not have to be in the school's colors. The uniforms would consist of polo shirts of any color and denim, navy, black or khaki bottoms no shorter than 2 inches above the knee.May 4.
